Domestic Gas Safety ACS
Each general work category has a core element which must be taken before an operative can be assessed on individual work types.
For Example:
An operative only wishes to install domestic central heating for which the appropriate assessment category is CEN1. Before taking CEN1, he must first be assessed on core domestic gas safety (CCN1).
After completing core domestic gas safety he is eligible to be assessed on one or more domestic appliances, but cannot legally carry out work on any appliance type until he has the appropriate certificate of assessment.
If our operative chooses only to take the central heating appliance assessment he can only legally work on central heating appliances.
Having gained his domestic core gas safety he can then choose to changeover to another discipline eg Core Commercial following which he could extend his work capability to include commercial heating appliances. For more information on changeover courses, see the commercial sections or further development.
Most candidates opt to attend our optional revision sessions prior to taking any of the following assessments. Whilst all of the following assessments can be taken without revision, we find that in a rapidly changing industry revision classes are an essential pre-requisite for all but the most up-to-date informed engineer.
These assessments have been designed to test competence in Domestic Natural Gas Safety work by both written and practical assessments in accordance with the requirements of the Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme for Individual Gas Fitting Operatives.

CORE GAS SAFETY CCN1- WRITTEN ASSESSMENTS
These consist of THREE Open and ONE Closed Book written assessments. The Open Book assessments permit the use of approved reference material such as CSkills manuals to obtain answers. The Closed Book contains questions on essential gas safety knowledge where reference material is not allowed. All four written assessments contain either MULTIPLE CHOICE questions or TRUE/FALSE statements.
CORE GAS SAFETY CCN1- PRACTICAL
ASSESSMENTS
Our courses cover all aspects of each assessment and are competitively priced.
The practical competencies are assessed in four sections: Domestic Installations, Ventilation, Gas Safety Controls and Flues - see table below.
INTRODUCTION
CORE COMPETENCIES ASSESSED - PRACTICAL TASKS UNDERTAKEN
Test for Tightness - with gas meter and appliances fitted- with no gas meter and no gas appliances fitted - identify, locate and repair gas escapes
Installation of pipework and fittings - identify the relevant standards in relation to pipework: passing through walls, supports and fixings, position in relation to other services, connection and disconnection, cross bonding- install copper and mild steel pipework (including longscrew) - use temporary continuity bond - purge an installation
Checking and/or setting meter regulators - check standing and working pressures at the meter, and explain the correct procedures to be taken if incorrect
Checking and setting appliance burner pressures and gas rates - check and set burner pressures and gas rates in accordance with appliance manufacturer’s instructions
Re-establish existing gas supply and re-light appliances - re-establish an existing gas supply by completing visual inspection of the system, purging, re-lighting appliances and checking for spillage at any open flued appliances
Characteristics of combustion - identify visual signs of complete and incomplete combustion due to faults from the lack of primary air, the condition of the burner and its components
Identification of unsafe situations - identify and classify unsafe situations as ‘At Risk’ or ‘Immediately Dangerous’ - explain gas emergency actions and procedures
Emergency notices and warning labels - select the appropriate warning labels or notices to a selection of unsafe situations
Ventilation - calculate ventilation requirements for specified situations and select appropriate air vents/bricks- identify adequate or inadequate pre-selected air vents/bricks for specified situations
The operation and checking of appliance gas safety devices and controls - identify and explain the operation of gas taps, regulators, relay valves, cooker lid safety shut off valves, vitiation sensing devices, bi-metal strips, thermo-electric valves, liquid expansion valves, thermostats (mechanical and electrical), solenoid valves and multi-functional controls- identify any controls not operating correctly.
DOMESTIC APPLIANCE ASSESSMENTS
The appliance assessments link the competencies gained during the Core Gas Safety assessment. The application of these competencies in conjunction with manufacturer’s instructions and other industry guidance will be required to complete the written and practical tests.
A typical assessment provision must enable a candidate to demonstrate knowledge and understanding and practical competence in:
• appliance installation and servicing
• checking operational safety components which are defective or require
- adjustment - cleaning - replacement - lubrication
• recognition of satisfactory/unsatisfactory operation of
- control taps - pressure switches
- lid safety cut off devices - fan thermostats
- gas valve assemblies - fan units
- thermostat(s) - gas light mantles
- flame supervision devices - burners
- limit thermostat(s) - heat exchangers

ON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF CCN1 AND
DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Why stop there!
Consider increasing your skill competency level by taking Change Over assessment modules. This would allow a domestic operative to extend their work range into the commercial sector of the industry where they can choose to undertake a number of commercial assessments:
CODNCo1: CHANGEOVER CORE GAS SAFETY TO COMMERCIAL GAS SAFETY
CODC1: CHANGEOVER CORE GAS SAFETY TO COMMERCIAL CATERING
COCATA1: CHANGEOVER DOMESTIC COOKERS TO COMMERCIAL CATERING APPLIANCES
CONGLP1: CHANGEOVER CORE GAS SAFETY (NATURAL GAS TO LPG GAS)
